Disputing a Hail Damage Claim: Build a Supported Response

If your hail claim has been denied or the estimate appears incomplete, start with the insurer’s written explanation. Identify the reason for the decision and the evidence needed to address it.

For a practical companion resource on documenting this kind of loss, see the ICRS Hail & Wind Claim Guide. Coverage and next steps depend on the facts and policy terms.

ICRS helps policyholders review property damage claims and present supported scope and estimate differences.

Identify the specific disagreement

Separate questions about what caused the damage from questions about the repair work, pricing or policy provisions. A response is more useful when each disputed item is tied to a photograph, inspection finding, estimate line or other supporting record.

Gather before-and-after evidence

Available pre-loss photographs, maintenance records and prior inspections can help establish the property’s condition. Compare those records with dated post-loss photographs and professional findings.

Weather information can provide context for the reported event. It should be considered alongside the property-specific evidence.

Compare the repair scope

Review the insurer’s estimate against the contractor’s proposed work. Identify differences in quantities, materials, repair methods and affected components.

For commercial roofs, organize findings by roof area and system. Document observed conditions and the basis for any proposed repair or replacement. Avoid treating every dent or mark as proof of the same type of damage.

Present a clear written response

For each disputed item, explain the insurer’s stated position, the evidence you are providing and the response you are requesting. Keep the supporting exhibits organized and retain a record of correspondence.

Identify applicable deadlines from the policy and claim documents. If the dispute involves legal rights or the meaning of a policy provision, obtain appropriate legal advice.

Decide what help is needed

Some questions call for a contractor, engineer or other specialist. A public adjuster can help organize and present the policyholder’s claim. The appropriate next step depends on the issue and the available evidence.
